Education for Making A Difference!
“The most important journey one will ever make is from the head to the heart. Community Service-Learning enables students to make this journey.”
- Bruce L. Taylor
- Picture tens of 1,000s of university students learning through community service in both rural and urban placements, all over Africa and Asia – and earning academic credits at the same time. Students and faculty Making A Difference! What an opportunity for African and Asian universities to contribute to their nation’s social and economic development. What an opportunity to integrate academic and experiential learning – and to be in the forefront of education for the common good.
- The J. W. McConnell Foundation recently donated over ten million US dollars to fund the development of Community Service-Learning Programs at ten universities across Canada. Taylor & Associates, Canada is looking for a sponsor and partner to fund a similar development of Community Service-Learning Programs, only where the need is far greater – at ten universities and countries in Africa and Asia.
- The 21st century has higher expectations for higher education. African and Asian political leaders rightfully demand universities to be more relevant to national priorities. Taylor & Associates, Canada is presently developing the program at the National University of Rwanda. In May 2007, our goal is to expand to ten new universities in Africa and Asia. It is time for students and faculty to be more relevant in Rwanda, Kenya, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and in all developing countries and to combine knowledge with action, study with service.
- The result. Students working hand-in-hand with villagers on the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.
- Stephen Lewis aptly reminds us that we are in a Race Against Time. It is time for education to progress ethicallyfrom knowledge to knowledge plus action, from the individual to a balance between the individual and the common good. The outcome: national social and economic development and a win-win for all six partners: the people, students, faculty, NGOs and other placement organizations, the university and the government.
- Taylor & Associates, Canada has developed a Community Service-Learning Program and a step-by-step process for universities. Like the J. W. McConnell Foundation’s generous support to Canadian universities, we need a sponsor and partner which will join us in this exciting, high return venture to develop credit awarding Community Service-Learning Programs at ten universities across Africa and Asia. What an untapped resource! Tens of 1,000s of university students across Africa and Asia Making a Difference!
